On 5th July 2023, Meta Platforms launched Threads, a new microblogging app, and platform as a rival for the microblogging giant Twitter. The new platform did not disappoint, as it saw more than 100 million sign-ups in its first five days.
With the coming of this data, it is now evident that Threads smashed the record of ChatGPT, as it emerged as the fastest-growing consumer app ever. To reach 100 million users, it took ChatGPT two months, TikTok nine months, and Instagram took two and a half years to reach that mark after its launch in 2010.
Meta Platforms launched Threads in hundred countries around the world on two app platforms, Google’s Play Store and Apple’s App Store. However, the app is not available in Europe, as Meta is still unsure about the European Union’s Data Privacy Legislation.
On the other hand, Twitter has some 200 million users that use the app on a regular basis. Furthermore, the app suffered from various technical glitches after Elon Musk bought the platform last year and sacked several staff members.
In addition to that, Elon Musk also introduced charges for many Twitter services that were previously available for free.
It looks easier for Threads to grow. This is due to the fact that Threads is linked to Instagram, which has more than a billion regular users. It is easy to sign up for Threads as it can be directed through the Instagram account. The user will not need to provide personal and account data, as the app will retrieve the same from the person’s Instagram.
