Sam Altman Joins Microsoft To Lead A New Advanced AI Research Team

Microsoft is about to hire Sam Altman (the former CEO of OpenAI) and Gerg Brockman (the co-founder of OpenAI). On Friday, the board of OpenAI fired Sam Altman and Greg Brockman in a Google Meet video call.

The OpenAI board said that it

no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.”

Despite that, negotiations went well between the board and the parties that are fired to potentially bring back Altman to OpenAI. As per reports, even Microsoft got involved to get Altman back to OpenAI.

Nadella exclaimed –

We’re extremely excited to share the news that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, together with colleagues, will be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team. […] We look forward to moving quickly to provide them with the resources needed for their success.” (source)

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sam Altman acknowledged that he will be joining Microsoft. He reposted Nadella’s message by stating – “the mission continues.” In return, Nadella responded by offering hints at how he sees Altman at Microsoft in the near future. He expects Altman to lead and innovate new things by building an independent identity and culture at Microsoft.
